Catch the Latest Buzz…

June marks the official start of summer activities—fishing, camping, boating and mosquito slapping. With disease-carrying mosquitoes just itching to grab a bite to eat, they're no longer just a pest; they're a real threat. According to the Centers for Disease Control, the most effective repellents for protection against West Nile Virus and encephalitis-carrying mosquitoes are those that contain DEET. In a test conducted by The New England Journal of Medicine, non-DEET products offered little or no protection, while DEET-containing products provided full protection for several hours. DEET has a remarkable safety record after 40 years of use and remains the gold standard for protection from disease-carrying insects—it also protects from Lyme-disease carrying ticks and other pests. Watkins Insect Repellent Spray contains 23.75% DEET—the amount that provided the most protection in this study—just enough to keep insects from being a pain in the neck.

Hot News!

If you want to cool off and burn some extra calories this summer, here's a hot tip: A meal that includes hot peppers can boost your metabolism for several hours, helping to burn extra calories. Ironically, hot peppers can also help you stay cool by stimulating the cooling center of the brain. They can also help to lower blood cholesterol and reduce blood clots, cutting the risk of heart attack and stroke. As if that weren't enough, they might even make you feel better by stimulating the release of endorphins, substances in the brain that act as natural painkillers and mood enhancers. Watkins offers a variety of hot sauces, salsas and hot spices.

Who's Your Daddy?

Whoever the father or father figure is in your life, let him know how much you appreciate him, not only on Father's Day, but throughout the entire year. Watkins has a variety of gift ideas for the outdoorsman and the businessman---but one item that sportsmen and businessmen can't seem to live without, is Watkins Vanilla Cologne Rollette. Golfers and fishermen tell us that the Vanilla Rollette is great for keeping gnats away--and they won't leave home without it! The handy pocket-sized rollette fits perfectly in his tackle box or golf bag. Of course, we recommend Watkins Insect Repellent with DEET for protection against mosquitoes, but if he'd rather swing at golf balls instead of gnats, Watkins Vanilla Cologne Rollette will help Dad score big with his teammates and he'll be a hit on the golf course.

The Power of Green!

Sorting through the confusion of green cleaning products.

Many companies are re-evaluating their product lines to better fit "green" standards.

Green Cleaning
Watkins didn't know it at the time, but the products that we have been committed to developing and bringing to your family for 140 years are getting a lot of attention and actively sought after by consumers.

Today we have many choices for natural and environmentally friendly cleaning products. How do we weed out the truly natural products from impostors? Gina Moore, Watkins Home Care Product Manager sat down with me to sort through this confusion and give us a few tips.

What makes a green cleaning product "green?"
At Watkins we have defined green cleaning products as items that use renewable, non-toxic, phosphate-free and biodegradable ingredients. Products that work, but don't create fumes or leave behind residue that may affect the health of your family or impact the environment.

How do "green" cleaners work?
Green cleaners break down dirt and grease using surfactants from natural renewable resources. For example, instead of using ammonia as the active ingredient, Watkins uses natural plant extracts. These active ingredients act like magnets pulling dirt up and away from the surface.

What should we be looking for when we are looking for "green" cleaning products?
Watkins of course! Your first indication that a cleaning product isn't as natural as it could be is the use of colorants or dyes. A neon pink or purple cleaner should send up a red flag. Pay close attention to ingredient decks, cautionary statements and label warnings. These might be an indication that the product isn't as natural as it could be.

How do we know a "green" cleaner is truly not going to harm our environment?
The Clean Water Fund, a non-profit organization, estimates that the average American uses forty pounds of environmentally harmful household cleaners each year. Multiply that number by 245 million Americans and the effects are significant! The important claims to look for with regard to environment are biodegradable and phosphate free. Also steer clear of aerosol cleaners that can deplete the ozone.

What ingredients should we steer clear of?
Watkins has established a freedom code for our Natural Home Care line complete with all the ingredients we steer clear of:

Watkins Commonly Used Natural Ingredients

When J.R. Watkins mixed his first
‘natural remedies’ batch in 1868, he
probably had no idea his “green”
philosophy would be more relevant
today than ever. This new line represents
more than 140 years of innovative,
natural product development —
J.R. would be so proud!

The Use Of Herbs And Spice

By: Michelle Bery

Throughout history, the use of herbs and spice has given flavor and instant recognition to a myriad of cuisines in a host of different cultures. Before there was convenience food; before there were restaurants; before there were even recipes; there were herbs and spice – the combinations of which were handed down from generation to generation as a way to prepare specific foods.

Today, herbs and spice are used in the same way – those special combinations instantly bringing you back to childhood in your mother’s kitchen. One whiff of dill and you’re instantly eating soup at your grandmother’s, one taste of curry and you’re whisked away to a special meal you once had on vacation. The combination of herbs and spice are a memory bank of our experiences and you can be sure that they will continue to be the stars in our cuisines of the future.

The use of herbs dates back to prehistoric times – much earlier than the benefits of spices were discovered. Used medicinally at first, natural herbs continue to be used to enhance a variety of cuisines and treat minor maladies as well as disease.

The word “spice” dates back to the end of the 12th century. Early Arab traders made vast fortunes trading spices to Europeans eager to experience these exotic flavors. America became involved in the spice trade in the 1800s and thus began our love affair with herbs and spice as delicious enhancements to our food.

Today, taste aside, the use of herbs and spice in our food allows us to eat much healthier. Herbs and spice can readily substitute for salt, preservatives, and a host of fatty ingredients typically used to add flavor. Instead, for those who want to focus on natural, whole foods as a part of their diet plan, the use of herbs and spice will give you all of the flavor without any of the guilt.

Research recipes that make use of the herbs and spice and you’ll soon be rewarded with a flavorful, healthier diet.
